For In-House Maintenance Contractors ## Module 1: Passive Fire Protection Foundations Fyra Academy’s Module 1 provides a practical introduction to passive fire protection and how it helps contain fire, heat and smoke within a building. Designed for property managers, facilities managers, caretakers, estates teams and in-house maintenance personnel, the course helps participants understand the important role they play in protecting fire-resisting construction during everyday maintenance, alterations and contractor works. ### What will participants learn? By the end of Module 1, participants will be able to: * Understand the purpose of passive fire protection and how it supports a building’s overall fire strategy. * Explain the difference between active and passive fire protection systems. * Recognise common compartment lines and understand where fire protection may be hidden, including above ceilings, within risers, lofts, shafts, plant rooms and service voids. * Identify visible concerns affecting fire doors, firestopping, service penetrations, walls, floors, ceilings, fire-resisting board systems, vents, dampers and access hatches. * Carry out simple visual awareness checks without presenting themselves as a qualified fire door inspector or passive fire specialist. * Understand how routine maintenance and contractor activity can unintentionally compromise compartmentation. * Apply Fyra Academy’s four-stage response: **Recognise, Restrict, Record and Refer**. * Know when work should be stopped and referred to the Responsible Person or a competent fire safety specialist. * Accurately record defects using photographs, locations, dimensions and supporting information. * Understand what evidence should be requested before passive fire protection work is accepted as complete. * Improve contractor control before, during and after works affecting fire-resisting construction. The course includes real-project “Spot the Issue” photographs, practical maintenance scenarios, defect-recording exercises and group discussion. Participants will learn how to describe what they can see, take the correct immediate action and escalate concerns without guessing fire ratings, repair products or compliance. ### Assessment and Certificate of Training At the end of the course, participants will complete a 10-question knowledge assessment covering the key learning points from the day. The pass mark is **80%**.
